Our Story
People ask us all the time how Black Family Beach Weekend got started.
Honestly, it started with us…
We've been besties since college, and some of our favorite memories have come from traveling together and spending time with the people we love. Over the years, that took us to places like Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, where we experienced something that stayed with us long after each trip ended.
Every summer, we'd watch the same families come back. The kids picked up right where they left off. Parents reconnected like no time had passed. There was an ease to it. A sense of comfort. A feeling that everyone belonged.
Every year we'd leave thinking, why should this feeling exist in just one place?
We realized it wasn't the beach that made it special.
It was the people.
The friendships. The traditions. The sense of belonging that came from families showing up for one another.
So instead of searching for that feeling somewhere else, we decided to create more spaces where it could grow.
And we are just getting started.
Why Cape May?
Cape May felt like the right place to begin.
It's beautiful and walkable, with a pace that invites you to slow down.
Just as importantly, it has a rich Black history. Long before we arrived, Black families were gathering at Grant Street Beach, creating memories and building community. There was something meaningful about continuing that story in a place that has welcomed generations before us.
When we gathered here for the first time, something special happened. Children made new friends. Parents stayed connected. Families left with memories that stretched beyond the weekend.
That's when we knew we had found the right place to begin.
One Shoreline at a Time
Coming back to Cape May for a second year feels special.
It reminds us that traditions don't happen overnight—they're built one gathering, one family, and one memory at a time.
Our hope is to continue creating spaces where families can experience that same sense of joy, connection, and belonging. One shoreline at a time.
We're so glad you're here, and we can't wait to welcome you.
